The read

Why Little Elm

Denton County

Little Elm is a Denton County town on Lewisville Lake that calls itself the "Town With A Lake Attitude." The Census Bureau estimated 62,727 residents in July 2025, up from 46,453 at the 2020 count, with a median household income of $119,219. It borders Frisco, and the Dallas North Tollway, US 380, Eldorado Parkway and FM 423 all run through or along it.

The lesson for Little Elm is that the address on the mailbox does not tell you the whole story. Four school districts serve the town, and big communities like Paloma Creek carry Little Elm mailing addresses while sitting outside town limits under their own water districts. Before you fall for a house, pull the appraisal district record so you know the exact taxing units, because that is where your monthly payment is decided.

Property taxes

For tax year 2025, the town rate is $0.549901 per $100, and with Denton County and the school district a typical in-town home lands at roughly 1.76% (Frisco ISD) to 1.96% (Little Elm ISD) combined. On a $400,000 home that is about $585 to $655 a month before exemptions. Areas outside town limits, such as Paloma Creek, are served by fresh water supply districts, so their tax bills are built differently.

Settling in to Little Elm

Electricity

Power to Choose lists Oncor as the delivery utility for ZIP 75068, so most Little Elm homes pick a retail electric plan there. Some Denton County addresses fall in the CoServ co-op area instead, so check CoServ's service map with your exact address.[14]

Water and trash

The Town of Little Elm's Utility Billing Office sets up new accounts for water, wastewater and trash, and its Connect Service link starts or reconnects service online. Trash and recycling are picked up weekly by CWD.[16]

Homestead exemption

Once you own and live in the home, file the residence homestead exemption with the Denton Central Appraisal District. It is free and you never need to pay a company to do it. Denton CAD takes applications online through its website.[18]

Schools

Little Elm ISD: new students register through the district's New Student Enrollment page, and its Attendance Zones page has a school search by address. Parts of the city are zoned to Frisco ISD, Denton ISD or Aubrey ISD, so check the address before you fall in love with a house.[19]

Car registration and license

Register your vehicle with the Denton County Tax Assessor-Collector (main office 1505 E. McKinney St., Denton). Texas DMV gives new residents 30 days to register, and this is an emissions county, so pass a state inspection first. For your license, nearby DPS offices include Lewisville (400 N. Valley Pkwy.) and the Carrollton Mega Center (4600 State Hwy. 121) (appointments required); DPS lets you drive on a valid out-of-state license for up to 90 days after moving.[21]
