One middle school, one important caveat
Independence High School opened in 2014 at 10555 Independence Parkway in Frisco (75035). TEA data published by the Texas Tribune shows the Knights at 1,717 students in 2025-26. Enrollment peaked at 2,278 in 2020-21, fell to 1,817 the next year and has held between about 1,670 and 1,720 since. TEA shows 15.3 students per teacher in 2024-25.
It has one of the simplest feeder patterns in Frisco ISD: in the district's 2026-27 zone file, every Independence address is assigned to Nelson Middle. The caveat is capacity. Frisco ISD says Nelson is at capacity for 2026-27, so students who attended a Frisco ISD feeder elementary in 2025-26 continue to Nelson, while new students who move into the Nelson zone attend Wester Middle, with transportation available on request.
That is the kind of detail that changes a family's plan, so I ask the district about middle school capacity on every Independence-zone address before we write an offer. Zones follow the exact address, and Frisco ISD says its School Zone Search is not 100% accurate. Check the house in the district tool, then confirm with Independence at 469.633.5400 and with Nelson or Wester for the middle school year you need.
Independence High by the numbers
Nelson, Wester and four elementaries
Nelson serves only Independence-zone addresses. Its elementary feeders in the zone are Liscano, Norris, Ashley and a small part of Sonntag.
Because Nelson is at capacity, new students who enroll from the Nelson zone for 2026-27 attend Wester Middle, according to Frisco ISD's 2026-27 zones page. Wester's own zone feeds Centennial and Memorial, so ask the district how high school assignment will work for a student who spends middle school at Wester.
Liscano and Norris each cover about 1,600 to 1,700 addresses, and Ashley about 1,500. Ashley also serves a small Heritage High area, and most of Sonntag's zone goes to Heritage, so those two need the full path checked.
No address moved into or out of Independence at the high school level between the district's 2025-26 and 2026-27 zone files. The change families feel is the Nelson capacity rule, not a boundary shift. I found no announced Independence boundary change for 2027-28 as of October 2026.
Neighborhoods we checked against the zone file
A listing address on Elderflower Lane returns Norris Elementary, Nelson Middle and Independence High in the 2026-27 zone data. Stonelake Estates is an east Frisco neighborhood of two-story homes built from 2004 to 2017.
A split neighborhood. Our Willow Bay page notes that most October 2026 listings showed Maus Middle and Heritage High, while a few showed Nelson Middle and Independence High. That is exactly the kind of place where the street decides the school, so test the exact address.
If you buy in the Nelson zone with a sixth, seventh or eighth grader who is new to Frisco ISD, plan for Wester under the 2026-27 rule and ask about transportation when you enroll.
I add neighborhoods only after testing a real address against the district's 2026-27 data. Send me the address and I will run it. To compare zones side by side, see Frisco homes by high school and our Frisco ISD school zones guide.
Programs and practical details
Frisco ISD's September 2026 list of 120 National Merit Semifinalists for 2027 included 16 Independence students. Students can also take classes at the district's Career and Technical Education Center and Collin College.
For 2026-28 Independence plays basketball and volleyball in District 11-5A and football in 5A Division II, District 4, with Frisco, Emerson, Memorial and Panther Creek.
Independence was one of six Frisco ISD high schools open to in-district transfers for incoming ninth graders in 2026-27, a list limited to campuses below 90% of projected capacity. Transfers are not guaranteed and parents handle transportation.
Independence, Nelson and Wester were all on the district's October 2026 list of campuses offering fare-based busing ($500 per student for 2026-27, $175 on free or reduced meals) for students who do not qualify for regular routes.
