The move

From Whitacre Tower to Legacy Drive

AT&T's global headquarters is in downtown Dallas today, in the 37-story Whitacre Tower. On January 5, 2026, the company told employees it would move to a new campus at 5400 Legacy Drive in Plano, on the northern 54 acres of the 100 acre former Electronic Data Systems property in the Legacy business park (NBC 5 DFW; Community Impact, March 2026).

The status as of October 2026: Plano approved a $20 million incentive and a zoning change on February 23, 2026, and Community Impact reported on October 16, 2026 that construction on the $1.35 billion campus could start in December. AT&T is targeting partial occupancy as early as the second half of 2028, and Wireless Estimator reported that full consolidation is expected before the Dallas lease expires in 2030. To earn the full incentive, AT&T must reach 10,000 employees on the campus by the end of 2039.

The new campus will consolidate AT&T's three largest North Texas locations in Central Dallas, Plano and Irving. If you already live in DFW and work downtown, your commute is the thing that changes. If you are relocating in, you may start downtown and finish in Plano, so it pays to buy for where you will be in 2029, not just next month.

Property taxes

No income tax, but read the tax line

Texas has no personal income tax. For someone transferring from another state, that is often worth thousands of dollars a year. What Texas collects instead is property tax, and around Legacy the 2025 combined rate ran from about 1.63% in Denton County Frisco to about 2.23% in Dallas County, based on Republic Title's 2025 DFW rate sheet.

Before exemptions: a $629K home in Plano's 75024 at about 1.71% is roughly $10,800 a year (about $900 a month). A $488K Allen home at about 1.77% is roughly $8,600 a year (about $720 a month). A $605K home in Far North Dallas' 75252 at about 1.97% (Plano ISD) is roughly $11,900 a year (about $990 a month).

Exemptions change the real bill. Every Texas school district must give a $140,000 homestead exemption on your primary residence, and Plano, Frisco and Dallas each offer a 20% city homestead exemption, while Allen offers 5%. You apply with the county appraisal district, generally before May 1. If you close after January 1, you can still claim the exemption for the rest of that year as long as the seller did not already receive it for that year. Once you qualify, the taxable appraised value of your homestead cannot rise more than 10% a year, starting the following tax year.

FAQ

Common questions

Is AT&T really moving its headquarters to Plano?
Yes. AT&T announced the move to employees on January 5, 2026, and Plano approved the incentive and zoning on February 23, 2026. As of an October 16, 2026 Community Impact report, construction could start in December. Partial occupancy is targeted for as early as the second half of 2028.
Where will the new AT&T headquarters be?
At 5400 Legacy Drive in Plano, the former Electronic Data Systems campus in the Legacy business park. AT&T will occupy the northern 54 acres of the 100 acre site. West Plano, Frisco and Far North Dallas are the closest home markets.
When will AT&T employees move from downtown Dallas to Plano?
AT&T is targeting partial occupancy as early as the second half of 2028, with full consolidation expected before its Dallas lease ends in 2030, per Wireless Estimator (May 2026). Timelines can shift, so check with your manager before you time a home purchase around it.
What are the best neighborhoods near Legacy in Plano for AT&T employees?
The shortest drives are in west Plano (ZIPs 75024 and 75093), Frisco and Far North Dallas, where typical values ran about $456K to $738K in September 2026 by ZIP. Allen and McKinney trade a few more minutes on SH 121 for lower typical values near $470K to $490K.
How much are property taxes in Plano?
For tax year 2025, a Plano home in Collin County and Plano ISD paid about 1.71% combined before exemptions, or roughly $10,800 a year on a $629K home. The city's 20% homestead exemption and the $140,000 school exemption reduce that for owner-occupants. File your homestead application with the appraisal district the year you buy.
Should I buy near downtown Dallas or near Plano if I join AT&T now?
If you expect to stay past 2028 to 2030, the Plano campus is where the commute will land. Neighborhoods along the Dallas North Tollway, like Far North Dallas or north Uptown, can work for both phases. Map your drive to both addresses before you choose.
