Texas energy choice

In most of Texas, including much of Dallas-Fort Worth, the electricity market is deregulated, so you can choose your retail electricity provider and plan. Fixed-rate plans of 12, 24 or 36 months protect you from price swings.

Common questions

Does switching providers change who delivers my power?
No. Your local utility still maintains the poles and wires and responds to outages. The retail provider handles your plan and billing.
Can everyone in Texas choose an electricity provider?
No. Customers in deregulated areas can choose. Areas served by a municipal utility or an electric cooperative generally cannot choose a retail provider, so check your address before you shop.
What should I check before signing an electricity plan?
The contract length, whether the rate is fixed or variable, the early termination fee and the Electricity Facts Label, which shows the average price at different usage levels.
